What happens at RYLA?
Every summer, 60-100 teenagers from around Idaho and Eastern Oregon share a long weekend at the Camp Cascade in Donnelly, Idaho for an intensive four day leadership camp. High school students who are incoming juniors to outgoing seniors are sponsored by Rotary clubs to attend the camp. The Rotary Youth Leadership Award program, RYLA, is a leadership development program that roughly spans one year. The program consist of: 1. A Four-Day Summer Leadership Camp (July 12-15, 2024). 2. Two One-Day (Fall and Winter) Weekend Follow Up Leadership Workshops Held in Both Meridian and Pocatello (Dates TBD) 3. Potential Ongoing Mentoring Opportunities from Local Rotary Member((s) 4. Potential to Return to the RYLA Summer Camp the Following Year as a Camp Leader 5. Other Potential Leadership Opportunities Within Rotary International The summer camp is experiential; activities are engaging and interactive both physically and intellectually. The leadership training focuses on practicing tangible leadership skills; some of which include: Communication Skills Creating a "Leadership Roadmap" for concrete steps in a Rylarian's leadership journey Networking with other current and future leaders Guiding a group to make smart decisions Identifying opportunities within school and community to exercise leadership The follow up mentoring, and workshops aim to build upon the skills gained at the summer camp as well as to as well as support students' attainment of goals identified at camp. |
